BPC-157 is a synthetic 15 amino acid peptide. Almost everything known about it comes from rats and mice, not people. In animals it speeds healing of tendon, ligament, gut and skin wounds. In people the evidence is three small uncontrolled pilot studies with fewer than 30 subjects between them. No controlled trial has tested whether it works or whether it is safe. It is not approved by the FDA for anything.
What is BPC-157?
BPC-157 stands for Body Protection Compound 157. It is a chain of 15 amino acids, which is why chemists call it a pentadecapeptide (a peptide 15 units long). The sequence was copied from a larger protein found in human gastric juice, the fluid your stomach uses to digest food. That origin matters. Most peptides fall apart fast in stomach acid. BPC-157 was singled out because it stays intact in human gastric juice. Researchers have given it to animals by mouth, by injection and as a cream, and it worked by all three routes. Its blood half life is short, but the effects in animals last much longer than the peptide does. It is not a hormone and not a steroid. It does not build muscle directly. In animals it acts on the plumbing of healing. It switches on VEGFR2 signalling (a switch that tells the body to grow new blood vessels). It also gets fibroblasts (the cells that lay down collagen) moving into a wound. That matters most in tissues with a poor blood supply, like tendon and ligament. It has no approved medical use, and no pharmaceutical grade version of it exists.
What is BPC-157 used for?
- In a small retrospective chart review, 14 of 16 people reported relief of knee pain after injection into the joint.[1]Human study
- In an uncontrolled pilot study, 10 of 12 women with interstitial cystitis said their bladder symptoms fully cleared after one treatment.[2]Human study
- In rats whose Achilles tendon was cut clean through, treated animals regained tendon strength and closed the gap in the tendon.[6]Animal or lab study only

Body Protection Compound-157 is a synthetic peptide derived from human gastric juice. It promotes angiogenesis, upregulates growth hormone receptors, and accelerates tendon, ligament, and gut healing through nitric oxide and FAK-paxillin pathway modulation.

Is BPC-157 legal in 2026?
Checked on 6 August 2026. The FDA lists BPC-157 on its page of bulk drug substances for compounding that may present significant safety risks. It sits in the section for substances whose nomination was withdrawn by the nominators, having previously been in category 2. The FDA's stated concern is that compounded BPC-157 may pose a risk for immunogenicity by some routes. It also says peptide impurities and ingredient characterisation are complex. The agency says it lacks enough information to know whether the drug would harm people. BPC-157 is not an approved medicine in the United States. A pharmacy compounding advisory committee vote is advice only and is not binding. Nothing about its status has changed.
