Semax vs Selank: What the Research Shows on Each Peptide

What Is the Difference Between Semax vs Selank?
Semax vs Selank comes down to what each was studied for. Semax was studied for brain injury, pain and learning, mostly in rats. Selank was studied for anxiety, in a few Russian trials. Both are short lab-made peptides from research teams in Moscow. For Semax, FDA lists nasal doses from small human studies. Selank trial abstracts give no dose.
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. Semax has seven of them: Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro (Dolotov, 2006). It is an analog of ACTH(4-10). That is a short copy of a piece of ACTH, a stress hormone made by the pituitary gland. Selank also has seven amino acids: Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro (Kost, 2001). It is built from tuftsin, a small immune peptide the body makes itself (Semenova, 2010).
Both end in the same three amino acids, Pro-Gly-Pro. FDA notes that this tail is thought to help Semax resist peptidases (FDA, 2026). Peptidases are enzymes that cut peptides apart. Past that tail, the two run on different chemistry.

How Does Semax Work in the Brain?
Most of what is known comes from rats and mice. FDA's 2026 review sums up the animal work. In rodents, Semax has neuroprotective and neurotrophic properties, meaning it shields and feeds nerve cells. It also eased pain and had antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like effects. Anxiolytic means anxiety-reducing. FDA adds that these act through poorly understood mechanisms (FDA, 2026).
What does the BDNF evidence show?
BDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor, is a protein that helps nerve cells grow and connect. In rats, one nasal dose of Semax at 50 mcg per kg raised BDNF protein up to 1.4-fold. The rise was in the hippocampus (Dolotov, 2006). The hippocampus is a brain region for learning and memory. The treated rats also learned an avoidance task better. The authors suggest Semax affects learning through this BDNF system.
A second rat study measured NGF, or nerve growth factor, too. One hour after the same nasal dose, both the Bdnf and Ngf genes were more active in the hippocampus. Ngf activity fell in the frontal cortex, near the front of the brain (Agapova, 2007). So the effect differed by brain region.
What happened after a stroke in rats?
Some rats had a small stroke, made with light, in the prefrontal cortex, the front of the brain. Those given Semax in the nose for 6 days had smaller areas of damage. They also kept a learned task better (Romanova, 2006). In another rat stroke model, Semax raised the activity of genes for BDNF, NGF and their receptors in the damaged cortex (Dmitrieva, 2009).
What does Semax do to dopamine?
Dopamine is a messenger chemical tied to drive and reward. In mice, Semax alone did not change dopamine levels in the striatum, a deep brain area. Given 20 minutes before amphetamine, it strongly boosted the dopamine release amphetamine caused (Eremin, 2005). It also raised a serotonin breakdown product in that area. FDA called the amphetamine finding concerning, because drugs of abuse such as cocaine raise dopamine in the striatum.
How Does Selank Work in the Brain?
For Selank too, the work on how it acts is in animals and cells. GABA is the brain's main calming messenger. A study on rat brain tissue found Selank acts as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA binding (Vyunova, 2018). In plain terms, it nudges the GABA receptor from a side site. It does not switch it on directly.
What does the gene evidence show?
One study gave rats Selank or GABA at 300 mcg per kg. The team tracked 84 genes for nerve signals in the front of the brain. They could measure 77. One hour after Selank, 29 of them changed. Counting Selank or GABA together, 45 changed (Volkova, 2016). The authors say one way it may work is by nudging the GABA system in that side-site way.
What does it do to serotonin?
Serotonin is a messenger chemical tied to mood. In rats, one Selank shot of 300 mcg per kg raised serotonin turnover in the hypothalamus and brain stem for 30 minutes to 2 hours. The hypothalamus is a brain region that steers hormones (Semenova, 2010). In those rats, it also made a learned memory last longer, tested up to 30 days later.
Do the two share any mechanism?
One test-tube study looked at both. In human serum, the liquid part of blood, each one slowed the enzymes that break down enkephalins, the body's own opioid peptides. Semax did so with an IC50 of 10 micromolar and Selank with 20 (Kost, 2001). IC50 is the strength needed to block half the enzyme activity. A lower number means stronger.

Which one has more human data?
Selank has the clearer patient trials for anxiety. Semax has a longer list of small human studies. FDA counts 33 to 47 healthy adults, 69 adults with medical conditions and 451 children given Semax in the nose (FDA, 2026). Most of those reports did not discuss safety. Three were meeting abstracts with few details.
Semax vs Selank Nasal Spray: What Doses Do Sources Report?
For Semax, FDA's review lists the doses used in the small human studies it found. They are reported below in FDA's own terms. They are not a guide for anyone. For Selank, the Russian trial abstracts give no dose, route or schedule.
| Study, as named by FDA | Who | Dose as FDA lists it |
|---|---|---|
| Cherkasova et al. 2002 | Subjects with chronic ischemic brain disease (long-term poor blood flow to the brain), number not given, meeting abstract | 600 mg in the nose daily for 10 days, as FDA lists it |
| Kaplan et al. 1996 | 19 healthy adult men | 1 mg (16 mcg/kg) in the nose daily for 2 days, or 0.25 mg once |
| Koroleva et al. 1996 | 37 adults with pain (trigeminal neuralgia, dental plexalgia, migraine) | 0.5 mg/kg in the nose, once |
| Ivanikov et al. 2002 | 32 adults with peptic ulcer | 1% solution, 2 to 4 drops per nostril three times a day for 10 days, with other drugs |
| Lebedeva et al. 2018; Panikratova et al. 2020 | 14 healthy adults in each | 1.2 mg in the nose |
FDA found no studies of Semax given by injection under the skin. The only route in the literature was the nose. FDA also found no human pharmacokinetic studies by any route. Pharmacokinetics means how a drug is absorbed and cleared. FDA notes that one website sells a 50:50 mix of Semax and Selank as an injection and a nasal spray. We found no published human study of that mix.
Selank vs Semax for Anxiety: What Did Trials Find?
For anxiety, only Selank has been tested in patients. One Russian trial set it against medazepam in 62 patients. They had generalized anxiety disorder, which means lasting worry, or neurasthenia (Zozulia, 2008). Medazepam is a benzodiazepine, a type of calming drug. Neurasthenia is an old term for long-lasting tiredness. Both drugs calmed anxiety to a similar degree. Selank also eased tiredness and raised mental energy.
A second trial compared Selank with phenazepam, another calming drug of the same type, in 60 patients. The authors report a strong anti-anxiety effect and a mild nootropic effect (Medvedev, 2014). Nootropic means it helped thinking. The calming effect lasted for a week after the last dose.
For Semax, the anxiety work is in rats and mice only. FDA lists calming effects among its animal findings. We found no Semax anxiety trial in people.
Semax vs Selank for ADHD: Is There Any Evidence?
We found no trial of either peptide in ADHD, a disorder of attention and restlessness. FDA's review mentions one article that suggests ADHD as a possible use for Semax. That idea rests on animal work and studies in healthy adults (FDA, 2026). FDA also notes Semax is marketed online for ADHD. ClinicalTrials.gov, the US trial registry, lists no trial of Semax or Selank.
Selank vs Semax Peptide Benefits: Were They Ever Tested Together?
We found no study that gave the two at the same time. One brain-scan study tested each one against a placebo, a dummy treatment, in 52 healthy people (Panikratova, 2020). It used resting-state fMRI, a scan of brain activity at rest, before and 5 and 20 minutes after dosing. The team found general and specific effects of each on links between the right amygdala and the right temporal cortex. The amygdala helps regulate anxiety.
That study compared the two peptides. It did not combine them. Any claim that a Semax and Selank stack works better than either alone has no trial behind it that we found.
Semax vs Selank Differences in Safety: What Is Known?
Safety data are thin for both. FDA found too little clinical data to describe the safety of Semax (FDA, 2026). It flagged three concerns:
- One study suggested Semax may slow blood clotting. That raises a question about bleeding.
- In mice, Semax boosted amphetamine's dopamine release, a response typical of drugs of abuse.
- A peptide given as a shot could set off an immune response. No study checked this.
FDA searched its database of side effect reports and found one Semax report. A consumer reported eye pain and burning after using Semax 0.1% nasal drops bought online. She reported a hospital stay after the exposure.
For Selank, an early paper by its research team says it does not cause the side effects typical of most anxiety drugs (Zozulya, 2001). That is the developers' own summary. Added to phenazepam, Selank lowered that drug's side effects, such as drowsiness and memory problems (Medvedev, 2015). A US review calls Selank a poorly studied Russian drug (Doyno and White, 2021). For either one, we found no long-term safety study in people and no study in pregnancy.
Where to buy Semax, Selank
The hard part with Semax, Selank isn't the protocol. It's finding a supplier that can prove what's in the vial. We assessed dozens against per-batch, third-party testing. A handful passed.

FDA's July 2026 briefing says Semax is not part of any FDA-approved drug. It notes Semax is a registered drug in Russia, sold there as 0.1% and 1% nasal drops. FDA staff found insufficient evidence that Semax works for cerebral ischemia, migraine or trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve pain in the face (FDA, 2026). Cerebral ischemia means poor blood flow to the brain. On balance, FDA staff weighed against adding Semax to the 503A bulks list. That is the list of bulk substances pharmacies may use to compound drugs.
For Selank, the US review says it is sold to US consumers as a dietary supplement (Doyno and White, 2021). The same review calls it poorly studied.
We only list sources that publish an independent, per-batch certificate of analysis. See the sources that clear that bar.
Semax vs Selank Difference: The Bottom Line
The two were studied for different things. Selank's best evidence is a few Russian anxiety trials. Semax's best evidence is rat work on BDNF and stroke, plus small human studies FDA judged too thin. No study tested them together. For Semax, the only human doses are those FDA lists from small studies, shown above; for Selank, the trial abstracts give none. No primary source sets a cycling schedule for either.
